Health and Safety Policy for Carpet Cleaning E1
Carpet Cleaning E1 is committed to providing professional cleaning services while protecting the health, safety and welfare of our employees, clients, visitors and the wider public. This Health and Safety Policy sets out our approach to managing risks associated with carpet, rug and upholstery cleaning in homes, offices and commercial premises within our operating area.
Policy Statement and Objectives
Our objective is to carry out all cleaning activities in a safe, controlled and environmentally responsible manner. We aim to prevent accidents, work-related ill health, property damage and unnecessary disruption to client premises.
We will identify hazards, assess risks and implement proportionate controls. We will provide information, instruction, training and supervision to ensure that all work is performed safely and in accordance with relevant legislation and recognised industry standards.
Management Responsibilities
Management at Carpet Cleaning E1 has overall responsibility for the effective implementation of this Health and Safety Policy. This includes ensuring that adequate resources are made available for safe equipment, protective clothing, staff training and the planning of work.
Management will regularly review this policy, risk assessments and working procedures to reflect changes in legislation, technology, client requirements and best practice. Where improvements are identified, they will be implemented promptly and communicated clearly to all staff.
Employee Responsibilities
All employees, operatives and contractors working on behalf of Carpet Cleaning E1 are required to:
Work safely and follow the methods and guidance given during training and set out in risk assessments and method statements.
Use machinery, manual tools, chemicals and personal protective equipment only for their intended purpose and in accordance with instructions.
Report immediately any hazards, unsafe conditions, defective equipment, spills, near misses, accidents or incidents to their supervisor or manager.
Cooperate with management in implementing health and safety requirements and participate in any investigations or improvement actions.
Never work under the influence of alcohol, illegal substances or any medication that may impair safe working, unless declared and risk assessed.
Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices
Before commencing work at client premises, we will assess the site, the nature of the cleaning task and any specific hazards present. Typical risks considered include slips, trips and falls, manual handling, electrical hazards, chemical exposure, noise and the presence of vulnerable persons or pets.
Suitable control measures may include safe routing of hoses and cables, the use of cable covers or warning signs, careful management of water and cleaning solutions, use of appropriate lifting techniques, team lifting where necessary and avoidance of working at height where it is not essential.
Method statements and safe systems of work are provided to all staff, and supervisors regularly monitor compliance.
Chemical Safety and COSHH
Carpet Cleaning E1 recognises the potential risks associated with cleaning agents and stain removal products. All chemicals are subject to assessment under the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health regulations or their equivalent guidance.
We maintain up-to-date safety data sheets for all products in use and ensure that employees are trained in safe handling, correct dilution, application and disposal procedures. Only approved chemicals supplied in properly labelled containers are used.
Personal protective equipment such as gloves, masks and eye protection is provided where there is a risk of contact with irritant or corrosive substances, or where airborne particles may be produced. Ventilation is maximised during and after treatment to protect both staff and occupants.
Equipment, Maintenance and Electrical Safety
All machines and tools used for carpet and upholstery cleaning, including extraction units, vacuums, rotary machines and accessories, are selected for safety and reliability. Equipment is inspected, tested and serviced at appropriate intervals to ensure it remains in safe working order.
Staff are trained to carry out pre use visual checks, report defects and immediately remove faulty equipment from service. Electrical leads, plugs and extension reels are managed to minimise trip hazards and prevent overloading of circuits.
Manual Handling and Ergonomics
Cleaning work often involves moving equipment, furniture and hoses. To reduce the risk of strains and musculoskeletal injuries, Carpet Cleaning E1 provides manual handling training and guidance on safe lifting, pushing and pulling techniques.
Where possible, equipment with wheels or handles is used to avoid carrying heavy loads. Furniture is only moved when necessary, and staff are instructed not to attempt tasks beyond their physical capability. Clients may be asked to relocate delicate or heavy items in advance where this is safer.
Protection of Clients, Visitors and the Public
We recognise our duty to protect anyone who may be affected by our work at or near client premises. During cleaning operations, clear signage and verbal warnings are used to highlight wet floors, trailing hoses or temporarily restricted access areas.
Special care is taken in homes with children, elderly occupants, people with mobility issues and pets. Cleaning solutions and equipment are kept under control at all times and never left unattended in accessible areas. At the end of each visit, the work area is left clean, tidy and safe.
Training, Supervision and Communication
All new staff undergo induction training covering health and safety responsibilities, emergency procedures, safe use of chemicals and equipment, and site conduct. Task specific training is provided and refreshed periodically.
Supervisors carry out on site checks, provide additional instruction where needed and discuss safety performance with team members. Health and safety information is communicated verbally, in writing and through ongoing briefings so that it remains understood and up to date.
Accidents, Incidents and Emergency Procedures
Any accident, injury, near miss or incident involving property damage is recorded and investigated. The findings are used to identify root causes and introduce corrective measures. First aid equipment is available to staff, and they are instructed on how to obtain medical assistance if needed.
In the event of a fire, gas leak or other emergency at a client site, our staff will follow the building procedures, assist with evacuation where safe to do so and immediately contact the relevant authorities.
Policy Review
This Health and Safety Policy is reviewed regularly to ensure it remains effective and relevant to the services provided by Carpet Cleaning E1. Revisions are communicated to all employees, and clients may request to view the current version at any time.
